AFRL Scholars is funded by the Air Force Research Laboratory and administered by the Universities Space Research Association (USRA), offering paid summer research internships to upper-level high school students and STEM college students. Scholars work on research topics with Air Force Research Laboratory scientists and engineers, full time at 40 hours a week for at least eight weeks. Sites are in many states, including Edwards Air Force Base and SSC-CGN in San Diego in California, and scholars must be willing to relocate temporarily.
AFRL does not publish applicant numbers or an acceptance rate; mentors rank applicants on STEM experience, courses, GPA, resume and recommendations. High school students generally earn $506.80 a week, and those at Edwards Air Force Base earn $874.62 a week plus living and travel support. The program accepts only US citizens, not permanent residents; applicants must be 16 by the deadline, or 18 for California sites, and must pass a background check.
For Irvine students, the California sites work only for those who are 18 by the application deadline; 16- and 17-year-olds can apply only to sites in other states. Applications for summer 2027 open October 12, 2026 and close January 11, 2027.
