Irvine’s public high schools belong to the Irvine Unified School District (IUSD); students are assigned by address, and no tuition is charged. Private high schools require an application and tuition, and they differ in entrance exams, courses, and school culture. Neither public nor private school is better in every case; the right choice depends on the environment that suits the student and on the family’s budget and circumstances. This guide compares the areas parents most often weigh, one at a time.
The Basic Differences Between the Two Paths
IUSD public high schools
Irvine has 5 comprehensive high schools: Irvine, Northwood, Portola, University, and Woodbridge
- Schools are assigned by address; each residential area corresponds to a designated high school
- No tuition
- To attend a school other than the designated one, families must request an intradistrict transfer within the district's application period; placement is decided by lottery, and parents are responsible for transportation
- The district also offers the Early College Program, to which 8th graders may apply, for taking college courses in partnership with Irvine Valley College
Orange County private high schools

- Applications are submitted in the fall of 8th grade; most schools require an entrance exam, recommendations, and an interview
- Tuition for the 2026-27 school year ranges from about $19,585 (Whittier Christian High School) to $58,100 (the highest tier at Sage Hill School)
- 9 of the 12 schools have a religious affiliation; Sage Hill School, Fairmont Preparatory Academy, and Pacific Academy do not
- Most schools offer need-based financial aid

Public high schools charge no tuition. Private high schools charge registration fees and costs for books, uniforms, and buses in addition to tuition, so costs should be calculated as a four-year total.

Admission process and requirements
Public schools admit by address. Private school requirements vary: the five Catholic high schools use the HSPT, Sage Hill School uses the ISEE or the SSAT, and Crean Lutheran High School has no written entrance exam.

UC publishes applicants, admits, and average GPA by high school. Because the students who apply differ, schools can only be reviewed one by one on the same basis, not ranked.

Culture
Religion and school culture
At religiously affiliated private schools, religion courses are usually required, and some schools require participation in religious activities. Families should first confirm that this is acceptable to them.

Public high schools are assigned by address, so most Irvine families live relatively close to school. Private high schools are spread across Orange County, bus service varies by school, and some schools have no buses, requiring parents to drive or carpool. For students who attend a non-designated public high school through an intradistrict transfer, IUSD also states that parents are responsible for transportation. When choosing a school, families should drive the route once during school commute hours.

The HSPT for Catholic high schools is concentrated from January to early February. For the 2026-27 school year, the IUSD intradistrict transfer lottery request period for grades 7 through 12 was January 5 to 23, 2026.

Private high school decisions; Early College applications
Most private high schools release decisions around March, after which enrollment contracts must be signed by the deadline. The 2026 application period for the IUSD Early College Program was March 13 to April 10.

Compare admission offers, financial aid, and the public high school option, then decide, pay the deposit, or reply to schools on time.
IUSD has not yet published its intradistrict transfer and Early College dates for the 2027-28 school year; the dates above from the 2026-27 school year are examples, and families should follow the dates the district publishes on its website each year. In addition, IUSD states that Portola High School will not accept general intradistrict transfer requests for the 2026-27 school year, and families new to IUSD must first enroll at the school assigned to their address.
