One of the first questions a family moving to Irvine needs to answer is which school the student will be assigned to, and whether another school is an option. The Irvine Unified School District (IUSD) lists three enrollment pathways on its enrollment page, and each applies to a different situation.
The Three Pathways
First, assignment by home address. This is the default pathway. Students are assigned to the neighborhood school that serves their home address. The district provides a School Locator tool: parents enter an address under School Boundaries & Assignments to find the assigned school. Checking this before buying or renting a home is the step Irvine families most need to take and most often forget.
Second, school choice within the district. The district runs a Secondary school choice process for the 2026-27 school year, which allows students to apply to an IUSD school other than their assigned school. Available seats and application procedures follow the district’s announcement for that year.
Third, interdistrict transfer. Families who want the student to attend a school outside the district use the Interdistrict Transfer process, which requires the approval of both the home district and the receiving district.
Three Common Questions from Parents
Can the assigned school be changed? Families may apply, but approval is not automatic. A change within the district goes through the school choice process, and a move across districts goes through the transfer permit. Both have application windows and limited seats, and the exact dates follow the district’s announcement for that year.
When should families check? The assigned school should be checked while house hunting, not after signing a contract. Different neighborhoods within the same ZIP code may be assigned to different schools, which is especially common in Irvine.
How different are the high schools? The five public high schools differ in their course offerings, the grade levels at which AP courses open and their weighting rules, so the same student may have different pathways available at different schools. Each school’s course map, math pathway, AP pass rates and University of California admissions data are collected in the Irvine High School Guides, with a four-page set for each school.
The Second Question After Enrollment
Choosing a school is only the first step; course placement comes next. In Irvine, math placement is determined from grade 7 onward using multiple assessment measures. It does not depend on which school the student attends, and the rules are the same across the district. Parents can learn these rules before moving, so that a student transferring in does not miss an acceleration window because the prior year’s assessment records are missing. The full criteria are explained in the IUSD Math Pathway guide.
EDUBUS Recommendation
The view of EDUBUS advisors is that school choice determines the pathway, while course placement determines the pace, and the two should be considered separately. Many families put all of their effort into which school to attend and only discover after enrolling that placement and course selection are what actually shape the four years. EDUBUS advisors recommend assessing the student’s current math and English levels at the same time the school is chosen, and using that assessment to judge the starting point after enrollment.
