The first-year application page on the University of Southern California admissions website shows that early application for most majors is split into binding Early Decision (ED) and non-binding Early Action (EA), both with a November 1 deadline. USC is a local private university that many Irvine Unified School District (IUSD) students apply to, and seniors now have less than four weeks before the deadline.

Who Is Affected by USC early decision and early action

Seniors planning to apply to USC. The website lists the following dates:

Plan Application deadline Decision notification Need-based aid deadline
ED (most majors) November 1 By mid-December November 1, 2026
EA (most majors) November 1 Late January November 15, 2026
Regular Decision (performing arts majors) December 1 By April 1 February 3, 2027
Regular Decision (other majors) January 10 By April 1 February 3, 2027

ED is binding: applicants must also submit an ED agreement, may not apply ED to any other school, and if admitted must enroll and withdraw all other applications. EA is both non-binding and non-restrictive. Applicants under either plan are considered for USC Merit Scholarships, and the outcome may also be a deferral to Regular Decision.

The three performing arts schools (dance, dramatic arts, and music) do not participate in early application and have a single December 1 deadline. The World Bachelor in Business program in the Marshall School of Business accepts only November 1 early applications and no longer participates in Regular Decision.

What to Do Now About USC early decision and early action

Choose the plan first, then finalize the rest of the early list. A student who applies ED to USC may not submit ED to another school; a student who only wants an early answer can choose EA. The binding terms of each early plan are explained in Early Decision vs. Early Action: Which Are Binding, and other schools’ dates are in Brief: Early Deadlines Split Between November 1 and 2.

Prepare financial aid forms alongside the application. Families seeking need-based aid must submit the FAFSA and the CSS Profile; for ED applicants that deadline is November 1, the same day as the application. California residents should also apply for a Cal Grant by March 2, 2027.
