The Orange County Department of Education (OCDE) reported on October 21 that U.S. News & World Report released its 2027 Best Elementary and Middle Schools rankings on October 20, with 29 Orange County campuses earning 31 placements in California’s top 100, including four Irvine Unified School District (IUSD) schools. This edition ranks schools only within each state and district, with no national ranking.

Who Is Affected by the U.S. News 2027 Elementary and Middle School Rankings

The rankings matter most to Irvine and Orange County families choosing an elementary or middle school or considering a move. OCDE lists the following Irvine schools:

School Category California rank
Irvine International Academy Middle school No. 25
Vista Verde School (IUSD) Middle school No. 29
Rancho San Joaquin Middle School (IUSD) Middle school No. 65
Irvine International Academy Elementary school No. 71
Sierra Vista Middle School (IUSD) Middle school No. 79
Santiago Hills Elementary School (IUSD) Elementary school No. 82

The highest-ranked Orange County schools are Oxford Academy in the Anaheim Union High School District (No. 3 among California middle schools) and Jack L. Weaver Elementary School in the Los Alamitos Unified School District (No. 10 among California elementary schools). OCDE invites readers to report schools it missed, so the list may be incomplete.

What Families Should Do About the U.S. News 2027 Rankings

Understand the methodology first. This edition evaluated more than 65,000 public schools nationwide. Half of each school’s score reflects student proficiency in mathematics and English, and the other half reflects academic performance relative to socioeconomic factors; the new edition also incorporates results at every reported proficiency level.

Look at district information beyond the rankings. This edition is based on state assessment data from the 2023-24 school year, so families choosing a school should also review attendance boundaries, course offerings, and pathways to high school. The EDUBUS Irvine elementary school rankings and Irvine middle school rankings pages currently list the 2026 edition, and because the methodology has changed, the two editions should not be compared directly. For the transition from middle school to high school, see the EDUBUS Irvine High School Guide; for other districts, see the Orange County Top 10 Public High Schools Guide.
