Families applying to private schools in Orange County need to understand how the two tests differ in their limits on attempts before scheduling a test date. The difference directly determines how much room for error the preparation timeline has.

ISEE and SSAT testing limits: Two sets of rules

ISEE: one attempt per testing season. The seasons are fall, winter, and spring/summer, for a maximum of three attempts per school year.

SSAT: the testing year runs from August 1 through July 31 of the following year. For paper-based testing, the Middle and Upper levels allow up to 6 Standard tests plus 1 Flex test; the Elementary level allows up to 3, consisting of 2 Standard tests and 1 Flex test. SSAT at Home is limited to 1 attempt per testing year; Prometric test centers currently allow 1 attempt, and the official site states that this will change to 2 in the fall of the current year.

Who Is Affected by ISEE and SSAT testing limits

Students applying to grade 9 at private high schools: the ISEE Upper Level is for applicants to grades 9 through 12. If the first score is not satisfactory, the next attempt must wait until the next testing season.

Students preparing for both tests: different attempt limits call for different strategies. On the SSAT, a student can take one sitting first to learn the pacing, while each ISEE sitting should be taken only when the student is ready to reach the target score.

What to Do Now About ISEE and SSAT testing limits

First confirm which test each target school requires. This is the only firm constraint. Requirements vary among Orange County private schools, so check school by school in the school directory.

Plan backward from the testing seasons. When less than one testing season remains before the application deadline, the ISEE effectively offers only one more chance, and the preparation schedule must be compressed accordingly.

Take a diagnostic practice test before deciding. The two tests differ in question style, and practice test results are more informative than any comparison article. Levels, question types, and attempt limits are compared in ISEE or SSAT: How to Choose, and level-specific intensive preparation is described on the ISEE top private school prep page.

The HSPT used by Catholic high schools is a separate test; its schedule is covered on the HSPT prep page.
