The Harvard University first-year application supplement for the 2026-27 cycle lists five required short-answer questions of no more than 150 words each. Restrictive Early Action (REA) closes November 1 at 11:59 p.m. local time, leaving Irvine seniors who plan to apply early to Harvard a little over three weeks.

Who Is Affected by the Harvard Short Answers

Seniors planning to apply through the Common Application for entry in fall 2027. The supplement notes that each question can be answered in about 100 words. The questions, in order:

No. Question in brief
1 How the life experiences that shaped you will enable you to contribute to Harvard
2 A time you strongly disagreed with someone about an idea or issue, how you engaged, and what you learned
3 Extracurricular activities, employment, travel, or family responsibilities that shaped you
4 How you hope to use your Harvard education in the future
5 Three things your roommates might like to know about you

Harvard requires SAT or ACT scores; AP, IB, and similar results may substitute only when those tests are not accessible. Early applicants are asked to submit scores by the end of October, and the November test dates still arrive in time. REA applicants may not apply to any other private institution under Early Decision, Early Action, or Restrictive Early Action, or to a binding early program at a public university; non-binding early programs at public universities remain open. Early decisions are released in mid-December, and Regular Decision closes January 1.

What to Do Now About the Harvard Short Answers

Give each question its own job and avoid repeating the main essay. Question 3 suits details that do not fit in the activities list, and question 5 suits specific everyday habits, away from the theme of the main essay.

The writing must be the student’s own work. The supplement states that students may seek guidance from people or technology but may not submit substantive content generated by other sources. Planning and revision support is available through the EDUBUS College Essay Bootcamp, and the differences between Restrictive Early Action and other early plans are explained in Early Decision vs. Early Action: Which Are Binding.

Submit financial aid materials on the same day. The Harvard timeline asks early applicants to submit the financial aid application by November 1 so that aid information arrives with the admission decision in mid-December.
