Founded in 2018, the International Economics Olympiad now involves more than sixty countries and territories and is the highest-tier international contest for secondary students in economics and finance.
The international competition has three parts: a 40-question multiple-choice paper on finance and economics; an open-question paper of five problems from which contestants answer four, demanding full economic reasoning; and a team business case presented in English to judges, which tests knowledge, writing and delivery together.
The 2026 edition was held in Shenzhen, China with 54 participating countries and territories; Japan hosts in 2027 in Tokyo, with dates to be confirmed officially. The sole U.S. route is the USA Economics and Business Olympiad, an individual two-round contest. Round 1 in mid-March is open to anyone: 40 multiple-choice problems taken digitally in one hour, with three tiers of honor roll.
Qualifiers sit a two-hour open-response Round 2 in late March that requires shown reasoning and awards gold, silver and bronze, and five students are then selected for Team USA. Both rounds require the specified proctoring technology, and USAEBO enforces a permanent ban for cheating.
