International Brain Beewith USA national and local chapter competitions

Brain Bee is one of the few neuroscience-specific competitions with a clean local-to-national-to-world ladder, which makes it easy for admissions readers to interpret: a county-level title followed by a spot at the national championship reads as genuine selectivity, not participation. For Irvine families it is unusually accessible — the Irvine Brain Bee is run by UC Irvine's Center for the Neurobiology of Learning and Memory, so preparing for it puts students in contact with UCI faculty and graduate mentors, relationships that often turn into summer research or recommendation letters. Because the content is real neuroanatomy and clinical reasoning rather than general biology trivia, it is strong evidence of pre-med or neuroscience commitment and usually belongs at the top of an activities list.

Organizer
International Brain Bee (IBB); USA Brain Bee national program; local chapters hosted by universities (e.g. Irvine Brain Bee hosted by the UC Irvine Center for the Neurobiology of Learning and Memory)
Eligibility
Open to teenagers. For the US pathway: competitors must be 13–19 years old at the time of competition and currently or formerly enrolled in an accredited U.S. high school. Students must first win a local chapter Brain Bee to be eligible for the USA National Championship, and may compete in the USA Championship only once in a lifetime. Each local chapter sets its own grade and catchment rules (the Irvine Brain Bee targets Orange County high school students). Only national champions advance to the IBB World Championship.
Format
A three-tier structure: local chapter Brain Bees (held November through March, with formats set by each chapter), then the USA National Championship each spring, then the IBB World Championship. The USA Championship runs in three rounds: Round 1 is a written test of 50 factual and conceptual questions worth one point each; Round 2A is a neuroanatomy practical with 25 stations using brain specimens and MRI images, one minute per station; Round 2B is 25 multiple-choice clinical and reasoning questions; Round 3 is an elimination final for the top 10–12 competitors who write answers on whiteboards and are eliminated after two misses. Recent World Championships have been held virtually alongside a major international neuroscience meeting.
Contest dates
November 6, 2026 · November 11, 2026
Fees
Each local chapter sets its own registration fee, so contact the chapter coordinator directly. The 2026 USA National Championship registration fee was $400, covering the competitor and one chaperone, including meals for the day and an event shirt, with additional family members needing a guest pass at $50 per person. Fees for the 2027 season have not yet been published.
Awards
Local chapter winners earn the right to represent their chapter at the USA National Championship (some chapters, such as the Irvine Brain Bee, also sponsor a trip for two to nationals). The USA champion represents the United States at the IBB World Championship. The top five finishers at the World Championship are invited to the IBB NextGen program, held alongside a major international neuroscience conference. Certificates and medals are awarded at each level.

About the competition

Founded in 1998 by Dr. Norbert Myslinski, the Brain Bee has grown into the world’s largest neuroscience competition for teenagers, drawing more than 25,000 competitors from over 50 countries each year. It runs on three tiers: students compete at a local chapter Brain Bee, chapter winners advance to their national championship, and each national champion represents their country at the IBB World Championship.

The United States currently has more than sixty chapters, four of them in California — Irvine (hosted by UC Irvine), Los Angeles (UCLA/USC), the Bay Area, and San Diego. Orange County students belong to the Irvine Brain Bee, organized by UCI’s Center for the Neurobiology of Learning and Memory, which pairs competitors with graduate-student mentors and runs review sessions before the event.

Chapter competitions take place between November and March. Content spans neuroanatomy, neurophysiology, neurochemistry, development, sensation and movement, memory and learning, emotion, sleep, addiction, and major neurological and psychiatric disorders, with the Society for Neuroscience’s BrainFacts book as the standard study text.

The national round adds a timed neuroanatomy practical with real specimens and MRI images plus clinical reasoning questions, making it considerably harder than most chapter events.

How to prepare

  • Read the BrainFacts book cover to cover twice and then drill yourself with question banks; most chapter-level questions fall inside its scope.
  • The neuroanatomy practical separates the field: practice identifying structures on real specimen photographs, 3D brain atlases and MRI slices, because memorizing verbal descriptions falls apart at a timed station.
  • Join the Irvine Brain Bee mailing list in early fall, then take advantage of the mentor pairing and campus review sessions — they are both preparation and a way into the UCI research community.
  • Rehearse the elimination format out loud and on a whiteboard under time pressure, focusing on spelling technical terms correctly and reasoning through clinical vignettes rather than only doing multiple choice.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which Brain Bee competition should an Irvine student enter?

The Irvine Brain Bee, hosted by UCI's Center for the Neurobiology of Learning and Memory (CNLM), serves Orange County and Southern California high schoolers, usually each February on the UCI campus; the 2026 edition drew a record 143 students. Registration is announced through the CNLM mailing list, and families can email memory@uci.edu for the next cycle. Los Angeles, San Diego and the Bay Area run their own chapters.

Has the USA Brain Bee National Championship been hosted on the UCI campus?

Yes. The 2026 USA National Brain Bee Championship took place on 25 April 2026 at UC Irvine, organized by the campus's CNLM, with a record 54 chapter champions from 33 states. The host site can change year to year, but local families have had both the chapter event and the national championship within a short drive.

Does an Irvine student have to win locally before nationals?

Yes. The USA National Championship admits only chapter winners, with no direct individual entry, and a student may compete in just one chapter event per year and at nationals only once in a lifetime. Irvine students can enter the local chapter competition in multiple years to build experience, then aim for the chapter title in their strongest year, saving that single national shot for the right moment.

What should you study for the Brain Bee?

The core text is BrainFacts, available as a free PDF, supplemented by Chapter 1 of the Open Neuroscience Initiative and the National Library of Medicine's Medical Encyclopedia. Topics span neuroanatomy, histology, MRI interpretation and common neurological and psychiatric disorders. Because the national championship includes a hands-on round identifying real specimens and scans under time pressure, reading alone is not enough — students need heavy practice with images and slides.

What is the format of the USA Brain Bee Championship?

Three rounds. Round 1 is a 50-question written test on foundational neuroscience, one point each. Round 2A is a neuroanatomy practical: 25 stations of specimens or MRI images with one minute per station. Round 2B is 25 multiple-choice questions on clinical cases and research. Round 3 is an elimination final for the top 10-12 competitors, answering on whiteboards until the top three are determined.

Can a 9th grader with no neuroscience background do the Brain Bee?

Yes. The US pathway requires competitors to be 13-19 years old on competition day and enrolled in (or a graduate of) an accredited US high school, so 9th graders qualify. The BrainFacts material is written at an accessible level and does not assume AP Biology, so starting from zero is normal. Starting early is an advantage, since chapter competitions can be entered every year while nationals is once in a lifetime.

What does the Brain Bee cost for an Irvine student?

Local chapter fees are set by each chapter, so ask the coordinator; the Irvine Brain Bee champion also receives a sponsored trip for two to nationals. The 2026 USA National Brain Bee Championship charged a $400 registration fee covering the competitor and one chaperone, including meals and an event shirt, with extra family guest passes at $50 each. Fees for the 2026-27 season had not been published at the time we checked.

Does the Irvine Brain Bee help with pre-med or neuroscience applications?

It helps when it is part of a longer story. A chapter title is a regional honour worth listing on the Common App, but the more durable value is that preparing forces real neuroscience learning, and the UCI-hosted chapter event puts students in front of working labs and researchers. Those contacts often lead to summer research, essay material, or volunteering at the next Brain Bee — which is what admissions readers actually respond to.
