Run by the nonprofit Alliance for Young Artists & Writers since 1923, the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards are the longest-running and best-known creative competition for US secondary students; Truman Capote, Sylvia Plath and Stephen King were early winners.
The writing side covers nine individual categories, from Critical Essay and Journalism to Short Story, Poetry and Screenplays & Scripts, plus a portfolio track restricted to graduating seniors. Judging happens in two stages: a regional affiliate awards Gold Keys, Silver Keys and Honorable Mentions, and Gold Keys advance to national judging for Gold and Silver Medals and special awards such as American Voices.
The 2027 season opens for entries on 1 October 2026, with regional deadlines falling between 1 December 2026 and 4 January 2027 (art and writing deadlines can differ within the same region). Regional results are announced 27 January 2027 and national results on 31 March 2027. Irvine families should use the official Region Locator first - missing the correct regional deadline is the single most common mistake.
Work is judged on originality, technical skill and personal voice.
