NHSDLC is an English-language debate league run in China built around American-format Public Forum: 2v2 rounds of about 60 minutes with crossfire, following rules closely modeled on US PF. It is a separate league, though - results and points do not feed into the NSDA system and it does not award TOC bids. Besides Public Forum it runs public speaking divisions and a Junior World School Debate event.

The league mainly serves students in mainland China and elsewhere in Asia, and it does draw international competitors from Indonesia, India, Japan and Korea. Online sessions exist, but the in-person city stops and the summer national championship are all held in China. For a student based full-time in the US, the practical fit is treating it as a summer-in-China supplement, with NSDA and local league competition remaining the year-round track. Confirm the current season's rules for overseas students with the organizers before registering.

Public Forum is split into Open, Junior for middle schoolers, and Novice Junior for middle schoolers who are new to debate. A student who has never competed should start in Novice Junior, and students aged 13 and under can also enter the team-based Junior World School Debate. If adversarial speaking still feels daunting, an original speech division is a good first step before moving into debate the following season.

Individual registration with a partner-matching request is allowed, but matching is not guaranteed and neither is the level or attendance of whoever you are paired with. The safer route is to line up a teammate from the same school or city in advance and confirm both of you can attend the same tournament stop. Online sessions are easier to fill; for in-person city stops, settle travel before you register.

Rounds, the resource packet and judge feedback are all in English, and judging rewards argument structure, evidence use and crossfire responses rather than accent or vocabulary. The practical bar is following a four-minute constructive and responding to it live. Public high school English and social science coursework already builds reading, argumentation and writing skills, and Novice-level topics and packets are pitched to match, so an intermediate speaker can start there.

The league publishes one topic per season along with an official resource packet - a core packet plus sample cases and supplementary readings - available through the official site once you register. The efficient prep order is to work through the core packet first and turn its evidence into pro and con cards, then supplement with outside English news. Searching broadly before mastering the official materials usually wastes time.

It demonstrates English debate ability and sustained commitment, but US admissions readers are far more familiar with the NSDA and TOC systems. The sensible framing is to treat NHSDLC as skill-building and an early source of results - the Public Forum structure and evidence habits transfer directly to NSDA - and to anchor the application with results from the US circuit.

Qualification comes from regular-season results. The season runs a fall regular series from September to December, a winter online invitational, and a spring regular series from March to June, with both online sessions and in-person city stops. Strong enough regular-season results earn a place at the summer national championship.
