USAAIO runs the USA-North America AI Olympiad for K-12 students in the United States and Canada and selects the US team for the International Olympiad in Artificial Intelligence (IOAI) as well as IAIO and IAI²O; the United States is a founding country of IOAI.
Unlike traditional informatics contests that test only algorithms, USAAIO examines the full modern AI stack: mathematical foundations such as linear algebra, probability and basic calculus, Python coding, classical machine learning, deep learning implemented in PyTorch, convolutional neural networks, and further syllabus topics including natural language processing and generative models.
For the 2027 season, Round 1 takes place on February 19, 2027 from 12:00 to 3:00 p.m. US Eastern Time, with registration open from June 1, 2026 until 11:59 p.m. EST on January 31, 2027. Round 1 runs in two parts on the day: a 60-minute non-coding paper on concepts and derivations, and a 75-minute coding part completed in Google Colab on CPU only.
Qualifiers advance to Round 2 in March or April 2027, where an L4 GPU is available; Rounds 2 and 3 are held in person on university campuses, and top performers attend the USAAIO camp in June 2027 where Team USA is chosen. Every round is proctored onsite.
Students with USACO Bronze or Silver level coding plus AP Calculus and some linear algebra adapt most easily; build several complete PyTorch training projects first, then revise systematically against the syllabus.
